Mark Phillips
Mark Phillips, co-founder and chairman of Phillips Collection, forged new ground in organic contemporary design, setting trends and redefining style with bold furniture, accessories, wall décor, sculpture, and lighting for indoor and outdoor spaces. With an eye for the unique and a curator’s sensibility, Mr. Phillips has forged new ground by elevating everyday objects into creative statements that make “Every piece a conversation.” Traditional craftsmanship is blended with modern design to create sculptural pieces that are as collectible as they are functional.
In 1983, he and his wife, Julie, launched Phillips Collection in a search that spanned the globe, with a mission to unearth and curate unique, hand-crafted works of art that challenge design norms. By building a global network of skilled artisans and production partners across Asia, Europe and South America, his High Point-based company has evolved from importing one-of-a-kind artifacts and art objects into creating scalable product collections suitable for both homes and hotels.
Working with natural materials such as live-edge slabs, reclaimed woods and semi-precious stones, Phillips Collection has elevated home accents into a theatrical showcase of architectural furnishings. A hallmark of this vision is to reclaim massive tree stumps and fallen trees and transform them into one-of-a-kind tables and sculptures. His ability to see the hidden beauty and art in nature’s cast-off materials brings a unique perspective to the company’s designs, which also reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and a belief that beautiful surroundings impact our health.
In addition to design leadership, Mr. Phillips has made lasting contributions to the home furnishings industry and global communities. He is an Honorary Trade Adviser to Thailand, founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, and has served on industry and academic boards, including the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation, International Home Furnishings Center, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. His philanthropic work spans international artisan support, children’s initiatives, and sustainability efforts.
