J. Ralph Stump

 J. Ralph Stump was a leading adviser in mergers and acquisitions, industrial real estate transactions and financing for furniture companies. In 1972, he founded Stump Financial Corp. in Charlotte, becoming a central figure in the industry’s evolution, advising owners, structuring transactions, and helping hundreds of businesses navigate periods of expansion and transformation.

Mr. Stump believed in three core principles: integrity, hard work and financial expertise.  While working with William Iselin & Co. (now CIT Financial) in the 1960s, he became passionate about furniture manufacturing and introducing it to a concept new to the industry: factoring, a way to advance money based on purchase orders, thereby providing early capital to emerging companies and helping to grow businesses faster. In this role, he became a champion of the smaller company and facilitated critical “character” loans for many startups that later became industry leaders.

A tireless road warrior, Mr. Stump, was a steady presence at markets across the country and played a role in the rise of new manufacturing hubs, including the Northern Mississippi upholstery sector.  Because he possessed the ability to quickly understand the big picture of the financials, operations and sales, he was a trusted advisor that could readily identify issues and craft creative solutions. In the 1990s and 2000s, during the widespread conversion of domestic manufacturing to importing, he facilitated the sales of hundreds of factories, thusly generating liquidity so funds could be reinvested into the core business.  Conversely, he also played a role in global investment in American companies.

Born in a log cabin in rural North Carolina, Mr. Stump remained committed to strengthening the communities that shaped his life. He worked closely with private and public organizations in Ashe County to encourage ecologically responsible development along the New River and long-term employment opportunities. A supporter of cancer research and higher education, Mr. Stump was generous with his time and insight, mentoring countless aspiring entrepreneurs in the industry.
