Jeffrey S. Child, president of the Salt Lake City-based R.C. Willey Home Furnishings has led growth fivefold during his 24-year tenure at the helm of the Berkshire Hathaway-owned retailer. Known for sharing strategies for success— not just within his company but also with other retailers —stores carry everything needed for the home: furnishings, mattresses, electronics, appliances, flooring, and fitness equipment. Its 10 stores are located in four western states, serviced by a network of three distribution centers.

Mr. Child began his 45-year-long career in the family business waxing warehouse floors and working his way up as a sales associate, buyer and merchandise manager where he gained a great love for furnishings.  Under leadership with his brother, Sheldon, and brother-in-law, Scott Hymas, the company has adopted new technologies to create a fully integrated supply chain throughout its sales, credit, operations and logistics processes, to enhance its competitive edge by providing exceptional flexibility, efficiency and innovation. Operational decisions are based on what is good for the customer.  Store visits are designed to be an unexpected experience, whether through entertaining displays, engaging events or exemplary service. During the Covid-19 pandemic, R.C. Willey devised creative new ways to serve its customers safely, while also protecting jobs and the health of its employees. Mr. Child holds a deep commitment to honesty and professionalism in taking care of each customer as well as his associates and vendors.

An active supporter of industry organizations, Mr. Child has served as president of the Home Furnishings Association, the Furniture Marketing Group and the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, particularly focused on its leadership initiatives. He is a longtime leader of his church and has served on many community boards, including the Legal Aid Society to provide representation for those unable to do so.  An active supporter of hundreds of local and national charities, R.C.
